- Description
- During recent decades, significant parts of southern Australia have experienced a decreasing rainfall and streamflow trend. However the timing with respect to both the start of the decreasing trend and the season where the majority of the reduction has been observed shows significant spatial variability. This study examines (a) when the climate shift actually occurred with respect to Victorian rainfall, (b) why the climate shift has occurred (i.e. how have the regional synoptic patterns that deliver the rain changed)?, (c) whether similar step-changes have occurred previously in the observed rainfall record?, (d) whether these step-changes can be linked to large-scale natural climate modes?, and (e) based on palaeo-reconstructions of indices of large-scale climate variability, whether the recent dry decade should be seen as abnormal?
